Paul Alan Gulyas, age 82, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, with his beloved wife by his side. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul lived a life shaped by faith, intellect, and a sharp wit that left a lasting impression on those who truly knew him.

Paul was married to Linda Lea Gulyas, his devoted wife and steadfast companion. He was a proud father to Lori Blose (husband Rich), Natalea Waller (husband Ryan), and Karen Sachetti, and a loving grandfather to Kelly and Hayden Mumbach and Sophie and Asher Waller. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Martha Gulyas.

Paul’s professional life reflected his love of words, music, and storytelling. He began as a high school English teacher, where his command of language and stories came naturally, and later became a popular disc jockey. 

A committed Christian, Paul placed his faith firmly in Jesus Christ. His favorite Scripture, Psalm 23, was a reflection of the trust and assurance that guided his life: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” That faith remained central to who he was and where he found his hope.

Paul was a phenomenal joke and storyteller with a quick, sometimes dry wit. He possessed a remarkable knowledge of music from the 1950s onward, was a true trivia wizard, and had a deep love for travel, especially cruising, having gone on an astounding 85 cruises. He was known for his generosity and his sharp mind, and he will be remembered for the stories he told, the insight he shared, and the distinctive presence he carried.

 

Doris Putkovich, age 91, passed away on January 12, 2026. Born to the late George and Zora Raynovich on Pittsburgh’s south side, Doris never forgot her extensive Serbian roots.

It was a rare and legendary match of brilliance and creativity when Doris, the city girl, met and married Rudy, the country boy, and they established their idyllic, joyous rural home near Murrysville. She gave up her job at Bell Telephone to marry, and to raise four daughters, whom she delighted not only by hand-sewing chic, couture fashions for their Barbies, but also by keeping them supplied with a steady stream of homemade oatmeal cookies, one-of-a-kind birthday cakes, and apple pies made from homegrown apples.

In her spare moments, Doris’s unquenchable curiosity and desire to learn led her to many, many pursuits. She learned and became a master of calligraphy, once completing a commission for Princess Grace of Monaco. She taught herself to read and write Russian, and the Cyrillic alphabet. She made a thorough study of Jungian dream analysis and participated in many dream groups. She read thousands of books. She learned belly-dancing and cake-decorating.

Perhaps her most ardent passion was tai chi. After Rudy and Doris’s move to Regent Square, she not only became a devoted student, but also a masterful instructor, teaching many tai chi classes around Pittsburgh for decades, up until a few months before her death. For a few years she taught a group of women in the Allegheny County Jail. Doris made friends with everyone, everywhere.

She was a devoted wife for 69 years, and caregiver to her husband Rudy prior to his passing. They laughed together much, and taught their daughters to laugh along with them.

Doris is survived by her four daughters: Fay Putkovich, Amy Kennedy, Eve Putkovich, and Lynn Armocida Radke (husband, Bill); also survived by three grandchildren: August Armocida, Camille Mitchell (husband, David), and Christian Armocida (partner, Ciara Short); and two great-grandchildren: Marceline Armocida and Damian Mitchell. Also survived by sister-in-law Mary Anne Raynovich (the late George), brother-in-law Ken Putkovich (wife, Betty), and nephews and nieces George, Andy, Donna, Diana, and Ken Jr.

Doris’s family is extremely grateful to and appreciative of caregivers and friends Rita Talackine and Kathy Williams, Seneca Hills Village, and Family Hospice.

Remember Doris by always looking on the bright side, laughing a lot, and raising a glass to her well-lived life, all while standing on one foot.

Mabel V. Sumter Davis, age 87, passed peacefully on Sunday, January 4, 2026 at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.  Devoted mother of Harry A (Rosalind) Davis, Sr. of Penn Hills, PA, Sharon M. Davis (Timothy) Bradford of Hopkins, SC, Cheryl V. Davis of Duluth, GA and Deborah Y. Davis of Verona, PA;  grandmother to 9; great-grandmother to 21 and great great grandmother to 25.  Mabel is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, family and friends.  Preceded in death by her beloved husband: Dr. Harry Davis: parents, Mott and Anne Louise Sumter: Sister, Ella Sumter Jeffrey.  Friends received Monday, January 12, 2026 9am til time of service at 11am at Shiloh Community Missionary Baptist Church, 6940 Frankstown Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15208. May 8, 1937 – January 5, 2026
Isaak Pekelny was born on May 8, 1937, in Kiev, Ukraine, the only child of Hiam Pekelny and Maria Pekelnaya. Throughout his life, Isaak was surrounded by dear friends who remained a constant source of joy, laughter, and companionship.
He proudly served in the military before embarking on a long and accomplished career designing shipping vessels. An exceptional draftsman with a steady hand and keen eye, Isaak took great pride in his work and craftsmanship.
Above all else, his greatest pride and joy was his only child, Anna (Pekelnaya) Zaydenberg, whom he adored deeply.
In 1992, Isaak immigrated to the United States with his family and began a new chapter of life in Squirrel Hill. He quickly became a pillar of the community, known for his warmth, integrity, and love of time spent with friends—especially around a card table.
Isaak was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vera Pekelnaya. Later in life, he was fortunate to find companionship again with his wonderful partner, Mila.
A lover of travel and lifelong learning, Isaak found special joy in teaching his great-grandsons how to play chess, passing down not only the game, but patience, strategy, and connection.
He is survived by his daughter, Anna Zaydenberg; his son-in-law, Lev Zaydenberg; his granddaughter, Marsha Simonds; Marsha’s partner, Jonathan Goodrum; and his cherished great-grandsons, Lucas Simonds, Jackson Simonds, and Ari Goodrum.
