Janyce Wiebe

    A memorial service and celebration of life for Janyce Marbury Wiebe will be held on 11:00 am, Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Heinz Memorial Chapel, at the corner of Fifth and Bellefield Avenues, Pittsburgh, PA, followed by a wake and reception at the nearby Phipps Conservatory, in the Special Functions Room. Born on January 19, 1959, Jan, a native of Albany, NY who found a true home in Pittsburgh, lost her 37-month battle with leukemia on December 10, 2018. Beloved daughter of Richard A. and Jean P. Wiebe of Cedar Park, TX, she is also survived by her aunts Robin Wiebe of Green Valley, AZ and Patti Frost of Scottdale, PA, siblings Ellen Simms of Cedar Park and Rick Wiebe of Providence, RI, their spouses Rich Simms and Michele Mericle, and many loving nieces and nephews. Jan, who earned her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Buffalo, was a Professor of Computer Science and the former Director of the Intelligent Systems Program at the University of Pittsburgh, and a fellow of the Association for Computational Linguistics. She was blessed to have the love and support of her many friends from the Steel City throughout her ordeal, which she bore with tremendous grace and courage.   Donations to support cancer research may be sent to the Director’s Development Fund at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in memory of Janyce Wiebe, UPMC Cancer Pavilion, Suite 1B, 5150 Centre Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232, 412-623-4700. Hassan Bazmi, M.D.

Of Sewickley Heights, PA passed away on December 9, 2018, at age 81, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 11, 1937 in Shiraz, Iran to the late Mohamad Javad Zia and Batool Bazmi. Hassan was the beloved husband of Dr. Neptune Kasraie Bazmi for 53 years; the loving father of Bahar, Babak and Shervin; cherished grandfather of Jasmine and Haley Heusey; and survived by his dear niece, Hengameh Holly Bazmi; and several other family members both in the Unites States and in Iran. Prior to immigrating to the United States in 1974 with his family, Hassan graduated from Pahlavi Medical School and served in the Army Health Corp.  In the U.S., Hassan completed his residency in General Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital, and later became the Head of General Surgery and President of the Medical Staff at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Passavant Hospital.  In addition, Hassan was a Fellow of the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons. He was in private surgical practice for over 27 years in the North Hills, where he served thousands of patients in his community. In addition to being a dedicated surgeon, Hassan found much joy in spending time with friends and family, playing tennis and basketball, and singing classical Persian music. Remembrance services will be held in his honor at the Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community (100 Norman Drive) in Cranberry Township, PA on Friday, December 14th from 6-8 p.m. EST. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to The Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. Demrey G. Brandon

  Demrey G. Brandon at age 67 of Churchill, PA, passed away at his home surrounded by family, on Wednesday, December 12, 2018.  Beloved son of the late George and Bettie Brandon; survived by his loving spouse, Joyce Brandon (Churchill, PA); daughters, Aurelia Willis (Springfield, MA); Renee Hardy (Swissvale, PA) and sister, Cynthia Barnes (Penn Hills, PA) and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.  Family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Rose Funeral Home, 10940 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills, PA 15235. Services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at City Reach Church Swissvale, 7327 McClure Avenue, Swissvale, PA 15218.

John D. Dawson “Rasta Johnny”

Age 60, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 2, 2018. Son of the late John and Doris Dawson; beloved father of John D. (Theresa) Dawson, Jr., Jennifer L. Dawson, Morgan H. (Termain Woodson, Sr.) Dawson, and Julian D. Dawson; loving grandfather to seven grandsons; devoted brother of Eric Dawson and Deborah (Sheron) Dawson-Davis; grandson of Cora Reynolds. Friends received Saturday 6-8 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 6-8 p.m. at ROSE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 10940 Frankstown Rd., Pgh., PA 15235 where services will be held Monday at 11 a.m.

Herbert Kravitz “Herbie”

Age 76, resident of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. Born May 28, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY. Preceded in death by parents, Ruth and Edward Kravitz of New York. Mr. Kravitz is survived by children, Howard Kravitz of Gilbert, AZ and Marni Kravitz of Washington, DC; sister, Ceil Rich; dear friend, Sun Choi; nephew, Kevin Rich; and nephew and niece, Larry and Betty Rich, and their children, Andrew and Ellie Rich, all from Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Kravitz was a loyal member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW, Local Union No. 3). He loved fishing and sports and was a lifetime fan of the NY Yankees. A private service will be held for family members and friends.
