On Friday, February 4, 2022, Dr. George Hogg Gilmore of Oakmont peacefully passed away. He was blessed to live a happy, full, and active life. Born in 1924, he was the second son of Dr. James Lee Gilmore and Marjorie Drummond Hogg Gilmore. George graduated from Shady Side Academy in 1942 and matriculated to college. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944. After serving two years during WWII, he graduated from Bowdoin College in 1946 and went on to the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine. During this period, he courted Janet Elizabeth Donaldson and the two were married in 1951. Upon completing his orthopedic surgery residency at Geisinger Memorial Hospital, he and Janet settled in Fox Chapel and raised their four children in a home filled with joy, friends and family. Everyone was welcome for Sunday dinner – advance notice optional.
George was blessed with a long and rewarding life. In his youth he was an Eagle Scout and talented football player. Professionally, he was a passionate physician, successful businessman, and innovative software founder. In his spare time, George enjoyed woodworking, model trains and gardening. Every spring, he would plant scores of flats in his greenhouse and then enthusiastically give the flowers away.
Some of George and Janet’s favorite memories were of their various international travels with friends. They were particularly fond of their trips to Scotland and Ireland, as well as the annual family reunions in Avalon, NJ which spanned over thirty years.
George is survived by his loved ones, daughter, Anne (Scott) Reid; his sons, Holland (Nicolette) Gilmore and James (Gina) Gilmore; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Mary Jane Gilmore. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son, George H. Gilmore Jr.; and his brothers, Dr. James Gilmore and Samuel Taylor Gilmore.
The Gilmore family would like to thank Dr. Gilmore’s loving caregivers, as well as the compassionate guidance of Family Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 16, 2022 in The Chapel at Homewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the St. Margaret Foundation, 815 Freeport Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15215 or a charity of your choice.
