Rudy Putkovich

Rudy P. Putkovich, age 91, passed away on july 18, 2023. Rudy was a modern-day Renaissance man. The brilliance of his mind and the skill of his hands led him to many endeavors, in all of which he excelled. At various times in his life, he was a photographer, mechanic, winemaker, moonshine distiller, painter, philatelist, stained glass artisan, jewelry designer and creator, architect and builder, and most of all a gardener extraordinaire, and the famed “Tomato Man” of Savannah Avenue in Regent Square. He was always researching, planning, or beginning his next project. His wit was incomparable, and there was never a broken item that he wasn’t able to fix. Rudy grew up in Joffre, PA. For many years, he worked as an electrical engineer and division manager at Westinghouse’s Research & Development center in Churchill. He began his career as an automotive engineer for Chrysler Corporation in Detroit. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Doris (Raynovich); daughters Fay Putkovich, Amy Kennedy, Eve Putkovich, and Lynn Armocida (husband, William Radke); grandchildren August Armocida, Camille Armocida, and Christian Armocida (partner, Ciara Short); great-granddaughter Marceline Armocida; brother Ken Putkovich (wife, Betty); sister-in-law Mary Anne Raynovich (the late George); and nieces and nephews Donna, Diana, Ken, Jr., George, and Andy. Rudy’s family is indebted to his wonderful caregivers both at Seneca Hills Village and Seneca Place, especially Rita and Kathy, and to Family Hospice. To honor Rudy, please raise a glass to him and to his well-lived life; laugh much; and spend more time playing and creating. Enjoy life.

Edna Allen

Edna Dorean Allen, of Pittsburgh, died peacefully in her sleep Thursday, July 13, 2023. Edna was born July 11, 1925, in Pittsburgh. She graduated from Schenley High School, Pittsburgh, and then graduated from Bellevue School of Nursing in 1943 as a registered nurse. She worked at Montefiore Hospital, Columbia Hospital and the VA Hospital, Oakland, where she retired in 1978. Edna was married to Wendall Allen for 44 years. He died in 1992. Edna is survived by son, Wendall Allen, of Chicago, Ill., and Karen Allen, of Pittsburgh. Mom loved working in her garden, trips to flower shows, garden centers, farmers markets and Pirates baseball games with her children. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Homewood. Her favorite vacations were summers on Presque Isle, Erie, and numerous cruises to the Caribbean. Mom was my best friend. She was loving, kind, patient and always had a positive attitude; a devoted mother and wife. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and generosity. We enjoyed so many great times trying out new restaurants and visiting so many wonderful places on our cruises and other vacations. She loved her two pups, Spanky and Bandit. They miss her so much. Heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Women’s Cancer Center at Magee Women’s Hospital and the staff on 7 West at Shadyside Hospital for their care and compassion for our mom. Final remembrance for Edna will be private. We kindly request that donations be made to Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, 6926 Hamilton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15208.
