Louis Freeman

Louis Freeman Sr., son of Allen and Helen Freeman, passed away on Tuesday, August 20 in his home of 64 years surrounded by family. He was 97.

Louis was born in Bessemer, Alabama on November 29, 1926. After graduating from Muscoda High School, Lou served his country in the United States Army, before being honorably discharged and migrating to Pittsburgh. He met and married Doris Morgan, a divorced mother of 4. They eventually had 7 biological children of their own.

Louis was a pillar of his community and the patriarch of his family who worked as a construction foreman and was an active union member. He inspired generations of his family as a savy businessman and a real estate mogul in his own right. He was tough, proud, and a testament to the possibilities of hard work – and, as he said, knowing “the value of a dollar” . However, he was a generous and giving man who loved jazz and blues music and was always sharp in the finest clothes, jewelry, hats, and cars with custom “Lou” license plates. He also took great pride in having the greenest lawn and best flowers in the neighborhood – and could be seen taking care of his children and grandchildren’s yards all over Pittsburgh.

Lou was preceded in death by his wife Doris, his son Allen, and his stepson Otis. Left to honor his memory are his brother Donnie (Denise), children and step-children, Barbara, Diane (Robert), Doris, Louis (Janet), Charmaine (Michael), Regina, Andre (Sherri), Lorie (David), and Shawn (Carmella), as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a very special friend – Geraldine – who will all miss him dearly.
