Dr. George Latimore Flickinger, Jr. of State College, PA, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, after the passing of his wife of 66 years, Karen Combs Flickinger only 3 months prior.  George was born on May 21, 1933 to his parents George, Sr, and Frances Baker in Hanover, PA.  He is survived his three daughters, Anne (Paul) Lobb, Dr. Barbara (Marta) Flickinger, and Kristin (David) Michener.  He is also survived by his seven grandchildren Sarah and David Lobb, and Hannah (Allie), Madeline, Michaela, Joel and Justin Michener. George graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1954 with a Bachelor Degree in Agricultural Science.  He went on to the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, to attain his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1958.  He then completed his PHD in Pathology (Endocrinology) while working at the Philadelphia Zoo.  It was at the University that he met the love of his life.  George and Karen were married in 1958 and soon began their life together in West Philadelphia before eventually settling with his family in Abington, PA.   George joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School as the head scientist of a research lab in Reproductive Endocrinology.  He helped design and then oversaw the In Vitro Fertilization Program for the Obstetrics and Gynecological Department at Penn Medical School.  After retiring from the University, Dr. Flickinger and his wife moved to Dallas, Texas where he was the head of the In Vitro Fertilization Program at Dallas Presbyterian Hospital.  They then returned to Philadelphia and in retirement George assisted his daughter Dr. Barbara Flickinger in her veterinary practice. George was a brilliant and unassuming gentleman.  He was a Philadelphia sports fan, enjoyed woodworking and was a self-taught artist in his later years.  He loved to read and attend educational programs, always furthering his knowledge of varied subjects.  In his later years, he and Karen moved to the Villages at Penn State University and enjoyed the company of each other and fellow residents.  George and Karen loved to travel but his fondest days were spent at his summer residence in Ocean Pines, Maryland for nearly 40 years, where he tended to his beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.  He learned to sail and had many great sailing adventures with family and friends.  George’s love for his daughters and grandchildren was always forefront in his life, but his devotion to and love of animals was evident every day.  He had many four-legged friends throughout his life, but his dog Chopper was his dearest companion.  George will certainly be missed by his family and friends.  His legacy of research in reproductive science will live on.  In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to or your local animal rescue organization or the Philadelphia Zoo.  Arrangements handled by Rose Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Howard E. Saunders, born on September 17, 1938, in Edmonton, North London, England, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024, in Pittsburgh. He was 85 years old. Howard was the beloved son of Harry and Cesira Saunders. He pursued his passion for chemistry, earning a BS in Chemistry from the Polytechnic of North London, a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of London, and a Certificate in Polymer Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. Howard’s professional journey led him to Pittsburgh, where he joined Westinghouse’s Research and Development center. Over more than 30 years, he became an internationally recognized expert in materials and coatings that provide electrical insulation, significantly contributing to various Westinghouse products. Even after retiring, Howard continued to share his expertise as a consultant for over a decade, mentoring many students along the way. Howard’s personal life was marked by love and resilience. He married Jacqueline Case in 1964, and together they had two sons, Aleister, born in 1967 in London, England, and Timothy, born in 1971 in Pittsburgh, PA.  After their divorce in 1978, Howard dedicated himself to raising his sons full-time. Jacqueline passed away in 2011. Aleister is married to Nomi (nee Buch) and has three children: Lev, Atara, and Eden. Timothy is married to Aletia (nee DeOrio) and has two children: Tynan and Katie. In 1980, Howard found love again with Pamela Von Plinsky. They shared a beautiful life together until Pamela’s passing in 2015. Howard, Aleister, and Timothy were warmly embraced by Pamela’s parents and her siblings Rachel (Dan Krantz), Wendy (Pat O’Donnell), Dave (Terecita), Mike, and Chris. Since 2016, Howard was lovingly accompanied in life and adventure by his girlfriend, Cindy Ross-Katz. Howard was a man of many talents and passions. He was a gifted athlete, excelling in tennis, squash, soccer, and biking. His love for jazz was evident in his skill with the drums, vibraphone, and piano. He was also an avid reader and had a deep appreciation for theater. Howard will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity, outgoing nature, sense of humor, positivity, and social spirit. He was a friendly, loving, supportive, and resilient individual who touched the lives of many. Howard’s deepest passion was his family, and nothing made him happier or prouder than to be with family, especially his grandchildren. Howard is survived by his sons, Aleister and Timothy, his grandchildren, and his girlfriend, Cindy. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A celebration of Howard’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Howard’s memory.
