Dorothy M. Davis

In memory of Dorothy M Davis

Dorothy M Davis, 81, formerly of Andrews, SC passed away peacefully at home on  Monday, February 1st, 2021.

Dorothy was born December 1, 1939 to Henry and Mary Davis in Andrews, SC.  She relocated to Pittsburgh, PA in the 1960’s and has called this home ever since.

Dorothy dedicated her life in service to others with a more than 30 year career working in health care.  She got her start working as a nursing assistant at the old Presbyterian Hospital. She went on to work for several nursing agencies before settling in with a long term assignment providing private duty care for a husband and wife.  She was so beloved by this couple and their children that she became like family to them.  After caring for the couple for many years until their passing, Dorothy went on to work at the Kane Regional Center, Glen Hazel, from where she would eventually retire in 2003.

And while she gave of herself in service to others,  we would be remiss if we did not speak about her devotion as a Mother,  a Grandmother, Great Grandmother and dear friend. Dorothy supported her family and friends through the many passions and difficulties of their lives.  She knew all too well how the tribulations of life could make even the strong grow weary as she had herself  experienced the bitter sting of suffering early on in her life. She made it her mission to bless others by showing them kindness, empathy and compassion.

Dorothy was a dedicated member of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church having spent over forty years in the ministry.  She loved reading the Bible and singing and praising along to her favorite gospel music.  She enjoyed  going to the YMCA and Planet Fitness to workout and socialize with friends as well as taking walks around her building to stay active. She found  great joy in spending time laughing and trading stories with her neighbors, going to Fortune Star Buffet with her good friend Rose and watching Chicago PD, Blue Bloods and NCIS on television.

Ask anyone to describe her and the words they always use are sweet, loving, and kind. Though she wasn’t always a jokester she did have a great sense of humor and her hearty laugh was always contagious.

Dorothy will be greatly missed but one thing she always made clear: “home is where the heart is and as long as I love you I will always be home.” So now even as she has transitioned to be at home with the Lord, we know she will always be home with us in our hearts.

Dorothy in humility did not want a fancy going home service instead choosing a very simple remembrance. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dorothy’s name to the Hillman Cancer  Center or other organizations supporting cancer research and resources.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Robert,  and eight  of her siblings.  She is survived by her sister Lee Ella Davis, brother Bethel Davis, her children  Jervy Davis, Theotis Davis, Mary Lou Lewis, Linda Briggs, Edward Davis and Rebecca Hickman as well as many beloved grand and great grandchildren.
