Jane Kelly Matthews

Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, and penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.
~Maya Angelou
Jane Kelly Matthews was one of the rare individuals who lived without judgement and cared for others unconditionally. Jane passed away peacefully on Friday, June 30, 2023. She was born on January 28, 1934, the youngest of two children born to Wallace Elmer Kelly and Margaret Shaffer. Jane moved to Pittsburgh after graduating from New Castle High School to attend Shadyside School of Nursing. She remained in Pittsburgh (Penn Hills) her entire life. She married Clarence T. Matthews (late) in 1957. They were married for 61 years. Their marriage was an example of commitment to many. At a time when their union was challenged by legal and social statutes, Jane and C.T. persevered. Jane was the quiet storm. Fiercely and joyfully devoted to family she instilled that love into her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Jane was that special person who showed her love for others through her actions…always…no matter what, when, where, or to whom. Her love of animals (especially cats), reading, genealogy, music, and willingness to be a fun-loving partner in crime were some of her more endearing qualities. Jane retired from the University of Pittsburgh Student Health Center. She was also a long-time volunteer at the Pittsburgh Children’s Zoo educational programs. Jane was an artist, jewelry maker, and avid computer game player. Diagnosed with dementia in 2010 Jane fought her battle on her terms, challenging the disease with dignity and strength. Jane left this world as she lived it…with ferocity, devotion, love, and determined will.
Jane is preceded in this journey by her husband CT. She is survived by her two children, Deborah Matthews Luckett (Michael) of West Virginia, and her son, Timothy Matthews (Cynthia) of Bowie, Maryland. She has four grandchildren John (Alissa), David (Mishka), Christina, and Victoria and one great-grandchild, Rae.
Jane will be interred with her husband at the National Military Cemetery of the Alleghenies. If you would like to continue her spirit of giving donations may be made in her honor to the following:
