David M Gatewood

David Michael Gatewood passed away on April 30, 2023, following a brave and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease, while being attended by the caring staff at Meadowcrest Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center and Commonwealth Hospice. He was 65 years old.
David was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 13, 1957, to Harry Gatewood, Jr. and Lula Williams. He was the youngest child of three boys. They grew up on Butler Street near Lawrenceville. David attended Morningside Elementary School, Arsenal Middle School, and graduated from Peabody High School. He took culinary classes and continued his love of cooking and food throughout his life.
David was a free spirit who loved to travel and explore Downtown Pittsburgh. He held various roles throughout his life including as a newspaper vendor, where he loved to interact with customers, and as a security guard at Fifth Avenue Place (Highmark Building). David enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball, and reality television, such as Cheaters and Basketball Wives. He also enjoyed jazz and politics.
David is survived by his aunt, Catherine Jackson; uncle, John Lavender; brothers, Harry Gatewood III (Towana), Charles Gatewood (Inez); niece, Danielle Gatewood-Gill (Joseph); nephew, Harry Gatewood IV; along with a host of cousins, family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Gatewood, Jr. and Lula Williams.
David loved his family and friends and took pride in their accomplishments and successes. He was a kind, funny, and compassionate man who will forever be missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations, in the name of David Gatewood to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, https://www.michaeljfox.org/. Viewing and services will be held at ROSE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 10940 Frankstown Road, on May 5, 2023. The viewing will be from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., with services starting at 12 p.m. Following service completion, burial will be at Union Dale Cemetery, 2200 Brighton Road.
