She believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and encouraged her students to dream big and think deeply.

She had a deep appreciation for music, playing the cello throughout high school and later organizing the African-American community orchestra. She also taught herself how to produce original hip-hop beats so that she could teach her students at City High how to use music creation software, keyboards and synthesizers. She got her family involved in learning to play classical music and had a lifelong hobby of collecting and learning to play instruments, including Cellos, pianos, flutes, guitar and saxophone, among others.
Another lifelong hobby of Carol’s was photography. She learned to developed film in her darkroom and enjoyed photographing wildlife (particularly butterflies), plants, and community events. She joined a group of African-American photographers in Pittsburgh – “Feel Like Going On” and exhibited her photography at several studios in Downtown Pittsburgh between 2005-2016. She enjoyed sharing her skills and knowledge as photographer with children as well as her nephew Jason Shelton and niece Talia Shelton.
Carol was also interested in exploring her family roots and enjoyed exploring historical archives in Richmond, VA. She amassed a great deal of genealogical records dating back to the early 1800s and was an early adopter of Ancestry.com for sharing the results of her research with extended family.
Carol was the glue that held the extended family together, helping to raise nieces and nephews, organizing family travel to build relationships including annual trips to Michigan, North Carolina and West Virginia, and being the one to organize family reunions of the extended Shelton and Miller families.
