Alfred Bryan Carl

Alfred Bryan Carl was born on July 7, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and died peacefully in the early hours on Sunday, February 18, 2024. He served in the United States Navy as a Seabee during the Korean War stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Alfred, A.B. or “Scrappy”’ as he was affectionately known by friends and family was married to Dorothy Jean Wheeler and they had four children.
A.B. later went on to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. During this time he became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Prior to his lasting career with Allegheny County, A.B. was employed with Westinghouse, Mesta Machinery and Duquesne Light. He spent the majority of his professional career as a Senior Planner for Allegheny County Planning Department, where he helped establish Allegheny County’s first Hydro-electric-powered dam. He remained with the County for 33 years, until his retirement. During his retirement, A.B. served as President and Board Member with the Turtle Creek Watershed Association, with a focus on clean water, restoration and protection for our communities. While residing in East Liberty, PA., A.B. led the “East Liberty Redevelopment Committee” to revitalize the community in culture, economic growth and sustainability. He was a Trustee and served on the Usher Board at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in East Liberty, PA.
During his latter years of County service A.B. met Eunice Hood and on June 6, 1992 he remarried and moved to Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1996, A.B.’s passion for environmental issues and pride in the Wilkinsburg community led him to combine his political interests to stand as a Mayoral candidate for the Borough of Wilkinsburg. During A.B.’s lifetime, he humbly served his community in numerous capacities well beyond what is written. He touched many lives with his charisma and passion with everything he did.
Alfred is survived by his wife Eunice and the four children from his first marriage, LaChele Viñao Carl (Alejandro), d’Rene C. Benson (Cameron), Dana Carl and David Carl. Also mourning his loss are his five grandchildren; Matteo Viñao Carl, Siena Benson, Summer Benson, Sia Benson, Sarafina Hood James (Justin) and many members of the Hood family, including Renee Hood, Rudy Hood, Cynthia Hood, Keith Hood(d), grandchildren Marlin, Marquette, Sultana, Jourdan, Eden, Supreme, Binti, Maya(d),Taj-Aura, Yahru, Saba, Ari and A.B.’s sister Yvonne Nixon, nephews William Price Robinson (Debbie), Jeff Nixon (Donna) and nieces Monica Nixon, Leslie Adams, great-niece Jovonne Robinson and great-grands and his many friends.
A.B. was preceded in death by his sisters Bernece, Melusena and brother Donnie.
Memorial Service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 at the funeral home
