Steven A. Edwards
Steven Anthony Edwards (Tony) died peacefully on May 5, 2024, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
Tony was born July 11, 1948, in Torrance, California, the first of four children of George Anthony Edwards and Anne Partridge Edwards. Growing up at the beach, he was an avid surfer and later was a varsity wrestler at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. Tony graduated from Stanford University (BA) and received graduate degrees from UC Santa Barbara (MA) and Stanford (PhD).
After receiving his doctorate, he joined the Religious Studies faculty at University of Pittsburgh, where he served until his retirement. Tony taught principally in the area of philosophy of religion. In addition to chairing the department for several years, he also taught in the University’s Philosophy Department and was a faculty member of the Program in Cultural Studies.
Preceded in death by his parents, Tony is survived by his wife, Lisa M. Kerestesi, his son Miles Travis Edwards, and stepson Alec M. Kerestesi. He is also survived by his sister Hilary, his brothers Phillip and Andrew, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be mourned by his longtime caregiver, friend, and department colleague Maureen Henderson.
A memorial will be held at First Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead, 416 East Tenth Avenue, Munhall, Pennsylvania after worship at 10:00 AM on Sunday, June 16, 2024. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Tony’s name may be made to Doctors without Borders (Médecins sans Frontières) or the donor’s favored charity.
